The Young Infant with Fever

A fever is one symptom of many different diseases ranging from very mild to very severe. A fever in a neonate (0-28 days of age) is defined as a rectal temperature of 100° (38° C). In an infant 1-3 months old, a fever is defined as a rectal temperature ranging from 100.4°-100.7° or greater (38-38.2° C). In an older child, a fever consists of a temperature of 101° or greater.

Underarm, forehead, and ear temperatures are very unreliable. Fever in an infant 8 weeks of age or younger can represent a very sick infant, thus should be further investigated as soon as possible. If your baby is 8 weeks old or younger and has a fever, you should call the office or answering service immediately and be prepared to come in.
